CHAPTER 11

Sasha was led down the red dirt path to a large formation in the canyon that was guarded by what looked to be strong warriors. Tattoos covered the visible parts of their bodies and the rest was hidden under bronze armor. Scratches, dents, and holes were all over their armor and she thought she could see eyes peering through the helmets to her. What they were thinking, she didn’t want to know.

The men leading her pushed her to the ground and she fell to her knees. The dirt here was softer and it was also redder. Whether it was natural or not, she didn’t want to know. She looked up to the formation before her. She could see a door, windows, and even light coming out. It was definitely Watson’s home, and it didn’t make her feel good.

“Who is this?” A guard stepped forward and pointed his weapon at her.

“Watson wants her. She was trying to escape with the prisoner and Kara.”

He turned to the others and gave a slight nod. Two stepped forward and picked her up by her arms. “Take her to his chambers and lock her in one of the cages. You know what happened to the last one that got out, so don’t let that happen this time.”

They pulled her to the entrance of Watson’s home and she tried her best to keep up with them. They were moving too fast, which she guessed was intentional. She could tell from the way they were acting that they were afraid of their captor. Kara was right. This man was bad. Whoever he’d been before, he was no longer. Talking to him rationally most likely wouldn’t work, not if his best warriors were afraid of him.

The halls they were traveling through were massive. Markings covered the walls and the ceiling rose far above their heads. Servants dashed up and down the halls with even more terrified looks on their faces than her own. After several minutes, they reached enormous wooden doors. One of the guards stepped forward and pushed them open. What she saw inside was even more terrifying than the dark forest.

Weapons hung on the walls and contraptions covered in blood were set up all around the room. If she were to guess, this wasn’t his bedroom, it was his lab and the people inside were his rats. As she looked around she saw others cowering in their cages. Many looked as if they’d already endured a lot, and others were wide-eyed with terror because they knew what was coming for them. Her heart raced as she was tossed into one of the cages and it was locked.

“You’d do best to keep your mouth shut. Watson is nicer to the quiet ones,” one of the guards said. “That girl over there is about to be an example of what happens to loud mouths.”

“I’ll kill you when I get out of here, coward.”

Sasha turned to see it was Kara who’d just spoke. She was in a dark corner, but she was standing in her cell with her hands on the bars.
